PCQE #4 Lost and Tensions
Mise-en-scene
Lighting
• Contrast- One area is dark an the other is bright
- this shows the division in classes and their work areas.
Costume
• The division in the crew can be seen through costume. Brett and Parker’s uniform is a lot more relaxed and stands out in comparison with the top deck crew who’s shirts are buttoned up fully.
Acting
• Parker brushes down the seat after telling Ash to get off “his” seat – this shows dominance of Parker’s character over Ash’s and the stereotypical behaviour of a hard man.
• Tension is shown through the tone of voice used between characters especially the females.
• There is also a division between the top deck crew before Brett and Parker arrive, for there is very little speaking and awkward smiles are passed.
• Dallas raises his voice to the lower deck crew “will you just listen to the man!”
Cinematography
Framing
• Women are in different frames/shots from the men- as is shown with Brett and Parker and the rest of the crew.
Scale
• Lots of medium close-ups to show tension- easy to read facial expressions
Sound
• Contrast- Loud in the lower areas, showing a lower class stance compared to the upper deck(classed) crew where it is a lot more contained and relaxed.
PCQE #5 Above and Below Deck
Mise-en-scene
Acting
• Comments past towards Ripley which could be seen as sexist or the fact that she is a senior crew member (top deck) “what the hell is she coming down here for?!”
• Raised voices again show disrespect towards her.
• They lie to them about how long it will take to repair the ship to annoy the top deck members.
• They wind her up when she gets to the bottom deck- they try to drown her out when she is asking questions, not taking her seriously.
Cinematography
Framing
• Ripley is in a frame of her own whilst Brett and Parker are combined in the same- this shows the sides taken and idea of threat towards her.
• Ripley is back grounded throughout the majority of the beginning of the film, this shows that she is not yet seen as a leading role (heroic character) in the film and she will start to emerge as the film goes on.
Scale
• There is a medium shot used on the top deck – giving us the chance to see, when line up, the importance of the crew members i.e. the men then the women last.
Sound
• In the lower deck there is a lot of noise caused by Brett and Parker which is used as a way to intimidate and wind up Ripley.
Editing
• Shots cut quickly between Ripley and Brett and parker, this creates a threat towards her and gives the impression of bullying.

PCQE # 6 (a,b,c) Transgressions
Mise-en-scene
Acting
• Male dominance is shown when they pretty much tell Lambert that she is going on the exploration of the new planet.
• No sense of caution when the crew go out to explore the SOS signal and they freely walk about.
• Tone of Lambert’s voice is doubtful and sarcastic which shows she is not looking forward to the exploration.
• Ash’s body language comes across as excited.
Lighting
• The change in light when they get out o the ship shows an unfamiliar place also this shows the danger of the environment in contrast to the protection of mother.
• Only lights on the helmets used when we see the journey through their eyes, this helps to create atmosphere and tension
Cinematography
Framing
• Three men are in a frame to themselves whilst Lambert is situated in her own frame which shows male dominance and separation from the group.
• Framing shows Lambert in the foreground and the others in the background to see her reaction of her being put forward for adventure.
• We get a point of view shot from Lambert for she is the only one who is hesitant on going which shows her reactions.
Movement
• Handheld camera used when Lambert is outside to show how scared she is.
• Low angle to show how overpowering the space jockey is.
Scale
• Extreme long-shot shows the scale of the ship they are entering
• Cuts to close ups of Lambert’s face show her expressions and feelings towards the task ahead.
Quality
• Moves from a shallow focus (Lambert) and Ash, Dallas and Kane are out of focus to show their ideas are not good to her.
Sound
• Contrast in sound between inside and outside, this shows how safe or dangerous a situation is.
• Slight music (non-diegetic) for atmospheric purposes
• Breathing noise when we get a point of view shot of Lambert to create fear or tension.
Editing
• Shots cut between the Nostromo and the outside to show contrast and danger.
